Legend is that during the War of Independence, St Michaels foiled the British Navy by putting lights in a nearby forest and blacking out their village, saving the village from a canon attack. It certainly is a very historic and pretty town. It was a boat building area, and was known for producing privateers that went after the British, which is why the British were attacking it.
We went on a day cruise, with a 2 hour trip on a catamaran across the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis, to St Michaels, with about 3 hours to spend exploring in St Michaels.
The cruise was very eventful, climaxing in a bus trip home because the boat had lost something that meant the boat horn and the toilets didn't work (among other things), none of which affected us on the way across. While there, we had lunch, then explored St Michaels on foot in a sweaty lather and ended up at the Chesapeake Maritime Museum, which definitely warrants further exploration.
We would definitely like to try it again, and hope for a boat ride home this time!
Tip - getting broiled seafood means your lunch takes longer. Just get the fish and chips.
